Pereira d'Oliveira 1937
Sercial Reserva Madeira
Rating: 95
75CL

1937 was a special year for Pereira d’Oliveira. It was the year when the Estado Novo government, under the authoritarian rule of Salazar, expropriated the land in São Martinho on the south coast of Madeira. D’Oliveiras lost their own vineyards here and the 1937 Sercial (bottled in 2003) was the last vintage produced from these sites.

Amber color. Mature and elegant bouquet. Such harmony. It’s ethereal with complex notes of orange peel, almonds, marzipan, flowers, paint and dried fruits. Slightly oxidative style – a trademark of the house and they’re so good at it.

On the palate it’s pure elegance, slight hint of sweetness, dried fruits, marzipan, tobacco before the acidity kicks in. But it’s not Sercial aggressive as it can be with less age. Long, lingering finish with a slight floral note. Sure, this is Madeira and will keep but something tells me this is a perfect bottling, the 2003 version.
